5.0 out of 5 starsBEST READ OF 2015!

This was by far the best read of 2015. Tinto found a way to make SciFi believable. I can't wait for the next book in the series since I feel like I have been spoiled by the spellbinding style that Kevin brings to the table. Every year I choose one book to purchase for holiday presents. This year it will be ICE! I can actually say I feel smarter after reading this gem. I can't wait for the movie!!

5.0 out of 5 starsA thrilling adventure…

I am a huge fan of historical adventures that may add in some unconventional elements to make an intriguing story. Some of my favorite authors in this genre are Preston & Child, James Rollins, and Clive Cussler. I was thrilled to find author Kevin Tinto's debut novel, "ICE", that also pulls these elements together masterfully and it was a fantastic read. The story of Leah, an archaeologist, and her estranged husband, Jack, who set off on an adventure to Antarctica after a discovery in New Mexico. There is mystery here, danger, and a wonderful fast-paced adventure that kept me highly engaged. I loved the two main characters and their intense relationship and am excited to see that this will be a continuing series. Very well done. (This is an unbiased book review and the opinions given here are 100% my own.)

5.0 out of 5 starsThe editor's take
ByAmazon Customeron October 5, 2015

I hope I might be forgiven for offering this necessarily biased review for ICE by Kevin Tinto. Kevin hired me to serve as a very early reader and editor for his ms. Ultimately, he also asked for permission to put my words of praise on the cover -- my first blurb ever. It made me a little sheepish, but now that I've done it, I might as well fill in the blanks of that praise here. Like I said, I may be biased, but I am a huge Kevin Tinto fan.

For those wondering whether to buy ICE, think about some of your favorite thrillers, and consider whether they contained the follow elements:

- an expedition into uncharted realms
- survival sequences in the most extreme outdoor conditions
- a testy relationship and authentic friction between a man and woman who really love one another but find it hard to get along with each other
- a seeming scientific impossibility that is not only a mystery/enigma, but also a driving obsession for the protagonist
- a conflict between superpowers that threatens to go nuclear
- a character who makes the ultimate sacrifice to complete his or her mission
- a longstanding, real-life mystery that is solved over the course of the story
- a mind-blowing "what-if" premise built around historical first-contact between extra-planetary visitors and primitive people
- Navy SEALs (enough said?)

If your favorite thrillers have included such elements, then ICE is clearly worth trying! If you haven't read the like before, then ICE is guaranteed to surprise you -- fresh versus derivative.

I grew up reading everything from action/adventure to Cold War spy novels. Sit me down with one of Alastair MacLean's books and I was in heaven.

As I got older, I found myself drawn to thrillers that combined science, even elements of science fiction, with a more earth-bound storyline. James Rollins writes this kind of novel at times. Ditto Lincoln Child and Doug Preston. You might also be familiar with Bob Mayer's Area 51 novels, along with one of my favorites: Mayer's standalone THE ROCK. Earlier this year I read GENOCIDE OF ONE by Kazuaki Takano. And I love Greg Iles's (full disclosure: also an editorial client of mine) science-y and speculative thrillers FOOTPRINTS OF GOD, SLEEP NO MORE, and MORTAL FEAR.

The bottom line is, when a talented novelist frees his imagination, taking on a fascinating real-life puzzle by applying his fiction-writing tools to it, the result can be mind-blowing and high-entertainment all at once. *That* is ICE by Kevin Tinto.

5.0 out of 5 starsGreat story. Especially liked the relationship of the two main characters.

Read "Ice" and I wanted to provide some
feedback about it. First of all, it was a great book and I enjoyed
reading it thoroughly. However, the only real comment I have is that it
needs a more interesting title. Of course it is not the same, but if one
compares the obvious title of "ice" to, for example, the more subtle
title of "to kill a mocking bird" the more subtle title makes the
reader think about the novel more. Also, I would consider myself a
romantic and when I read the ending I wished that there had been a bigger
reunion between Jack and Leah, because I loved the way he risked
everything for her. To continue, I thought it was very interesting how
the author had the excerpt in the beginning and the end from the view point of
the indigenous people. The way the dead body in the room tied together
with the whole story was very interesting to me. I also noticed that the story
contained a lot of research on planes and the way they work, which made the
story much more real and believable considering that the novel is written
about aliens. There is an obvious plot, evil character, and hero to the
story along with science fiction, making it a story that I enjoyed very
much and continued to think about after I finished it. There could be a
sequel and I hope there is one that tells the reader
more about the aliens.
